Isabel's Honors Portfolio
My Story
A little bit about me: I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, between Oregon and Washington. I moved around quite a bit for my parents' jobs, especially in High School. Although attending three different High Schools during COVID years was challenging, it pushed me to get out of comfort zone. I gained lifelong skills through this journey. I have a personal connection to immigration, with both my parents being immigrants. And with many of my family members being in education, seeing the direct impact the brutal immigration process has on our young immigrants. This is part of the reason why I feel especially passionate about this issue. I also am passionate about advocating for those affected by the child welfare system, the prison system, domestic violence, and all of our vulnerable communities.
Academics
In my first year of college, I explored various fields - STEM and Social Sciences. I realized by the end of that year that I wanted to completely focus on Social Science because that is where my passion lies. I know for certain, that my future career will involve advocating for human rights, social justice, and equity/inclusion. This year my goal is to hone in on a major. I'm giving myself space to try out Law Societies and Justice, Political Science, and Social Welfare. With my love for American Ethnic Studies, I hope to double major. I also am a bilingual bicultural Latina, and plan on pursuing a minor in Spanish. While the road ahead is quite unpredictable, I'm excited to see what comes of it!

Work/Volunteering
Having experiential learning opportunities such as working as a certified nursing assistant, working as a caregiver, volunteering at the University District Food Bank, and volunteering with an Immigration Attorney at LCSNW has been extremely helpful in me determining the best career. Even helping out with a Bilingual kinder jumpstart was a crucial experience. After these various opportunities, I realized whether it was directly related to my field or not, the experience was invaluable. I hope to continue gaining more real-world experience in Social Science and non Social Science fields.

Hobbies
In my free time I enjoy running, hiking (not so extreme), spending time with family, cooking, baking, playing board games, crocheting, and reading. My personal goal for this year is to find a better balance between hobbies and school/work. Our mental health is important!
